A Hellenic Air Force F-4 Phantom crashed and burst into flames at the Athens Flying Week airshow on 5 September 2026. Both pilots died. The jet crashed during a aerobatic display, in front of a crowd of spectators.
The aircraft was performing in a routine airshow sequence when it went down. Witnesses said they saw the jet come down suddenly before hitting the ground and catching fire.
Greece announced a period of military mourning after the crash. The loss of both crew members drew widespread grief across the country. Officials said the aircraft was lost and called for an inquiry.
